Luckily, you don’t have to worry about pet sitters or kennels when you vacation with us. Sand `N Sea offers a large selection of pet friendly vacation rentals, so your pup can join in on the fun! Here are a few tips to help you and your dog have a great time at the beach: • Be sure to have plenty of fresh water available for your pup to drink. • Provide twice as much fresh water as usual. It’s hot at the beach and your dog will drink more than normal. • Don’t let your dog drink sea water. It can cause him/her to get sick. • Remember the leash laws. City ordinances require dogs to be on leashes at all times. • Arrange for a shady, protected place for your dog to rest after a romp in the sun and surf. • If you leave your dog leashed in the shade, be sure to leave plenty of water nearby. • Pets get sunburned too! Use sunscreen on exposed areas, like on noses and ears. • If the sand is too hot for your feet, it is probably too hot for your dog’s foot pads. • Don’t throw sticks or Frisbees far out into the water. The undertow can be strong and unpredictable, capable of carrying your dog out to sea before you know it. So play on the sand and near the water’s edge. • Each day, rinse the salt water off your pup with fresh water. • Watch for heat stroke and over exposure on sunny days, especially from noon to four o’clock- the hottest part of the day. • Snakes! Do not leave your dog unattended in the yard. There have been snake sightings. • Galveston has several restaurants that welcome pets. We’ll give you the list at check-in. If you need help while on the island, Sand `N Sea has a list of recommended vets. Take advantage of these West End birding hot spots during your stay: Finding Our Feathered Friends SETTEGAST ROAD Take a drive through the undeveloped ranch land off Stewart Road that provides spring habitat for whimbrels, long-billed curlews and American golden-plovers. OPPENHEIMER BIRD OBSERVATORY Located at the Coastal Heritage Preserve, near the corner of Stewart and Settegast Roads, this is the only wildlife viewing facility of its kind on the Island. It is also ADA accessible. Artistboat.org 3 TREES Site of a historic battle between privateer Jean Laﬁtte and the Karankawa Indians, this spot, located near the entrance to Lafﬁtes Cove, offers a chance to see many members of the ever-changing population of birds that call Galveston home. SAN LUIS PASS One of the most productive areas in Texas for migrating and nesting birds; view terns, herons, Wilson’s plovers and, if you’re lucky, the endangered piping plover — just to name a few. Visit Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council’s website, GINTC.org, to learn about the Island’s natural habitats and events. SPORTSMAN ROAD Off of “S” Road, and just past 8 Mile Road, this marsh area features clapper rails, tricolored herons, American oystercatchers and more. GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK Join the Friends of GISP on Sunday mornings for a guided walking tour of the beach and bay sides of the park with a chance to view hundreds of birds including white-tailed kites, caracaras, ospreys, ibis and plenty more! FOGISP.wordpress.com DOS VACAS MUERTAS Located on a dirt road at the far eastern edge of Sea Isle, this 6-acre sanctuary created by the late George Clayton includes a pond and stands of salt cedars for traveling ﬂycatchers, warblers, vireos and many more birds. LAFFITES COVE NATURE RESERVE Located on the eastern edge of the subdivision, this is an ideal resting place for migrant land birds like warblers, tanagers and orioles during their Gulf crossings each year. Walk along any portion of the West End’s 18 miles of beaches and you’ll ﬁnd a Gulf Coast wonderland: driftwood from distant lands, sea glass, sand dollars and other seashells. At the water’s edge, keep an eye out for the sandpipers and small crabs that are also darting in and out of the surf! Sargassum, a type of seaweed, arrives on our shores some years. It provides a free-ﬂoating habitat for a plethora of juvenile aquatic species like nudibranchs, seahorses, crabs, shrimp and triggerﬁsh. Grab a net or bucket and go wading in the water to see what exotic species you can ﬁnd! When the Sargassum washes onto our shores, and we never know when it will happen, it can be very unappealing. We certainly appreciate it when our visitors are tolerant of this important component of Galveston’s coastal ecosystem. Sargassum provides the infrastructure for the protective sand dunes that guard our shorelines against high tides and storm surges, and offers a habitat for coastal creatures like shore birds and crabs. The most important thing to know is that no matter where your interests lie — bird watching, beachcombing, casting a line, or just enjoying the sunshine — you’ll ﬁnd our stretch of coastal paradise the perfect place to relax and enjoy time with your family and friends!
